- REPORT - The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake(M9.0)

Strong motion distribution at Eastern Japan
(Realtime Intensity, RI)

Here is the result of analysis on the strong motion of the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake at March 11, 2011.
More than 5 of Realtime Intensity (RI) was observed in a wide area along pacific ocean of eastern Japan.
RI must be almost same value of the seismic intensity of JMA.
This analysis used the strong motion records of K-NET,KiK-net/NIED.

Time variation of RI.(animation)
Strong motion distribution at Eastern Japan (Realtime Intensity, RI)
Realtime Intensity can be derived directry from the earthquake motion in realtime with physical background. And the maximum value of RI is close to the seismic intensity of JMA.

Strong motion distribution at Eastern Japan (Modified Mercalli Intensity, MMI)

Strong motion distribution at Eastern Japan (5HzPGA)
5HzPGA is filtered Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) less than 5Hz and this PGA relates to the earthqukake damage.
This PGA is commonly used as an index for the alarm to stop the train operation.
